What is in the ten pages

  1. Binder cover

Write in the family name and the year.

  2. Start Here

How to build the binder in one evening, step by step.

  3. Section Tab Labels

Six labels, ready to cut out.

  4. Master Document Inventory

What the document is, where the original lives, whether a copy exists.

  5. Keep or Shred

Retention periods from IRS and FTC guidance, plus a few common-practice lines.

  6. Emergency Contacts

One page for the refrigerator door.

  7. Household at a Glance

Policies, utilities, the accounts tied to the house.

  8. Medical One-Pager

    Medications, allergies, doctors.

  9. Monthly Bills Tracker

What goes out, when, from which account.

  10. Password & Accounts Log

On paper, in the binder, not on a note on the phone.

What it is not

There are no legal forms in here — no will, no power of attorney, no medical directive. Rules differ by state. An attorney can prepare a will or power of attorney. For a medical directive, ask your doctor, hospital or state health department which form is valid where you live. The binder keeps track of where the real, signed documents are.

How people print it

US Letter, one-sided, plain paper. Nothing on the page is a solid color block, so a home printer gets through all ten pages without eating a cartridge. Three-hole punch margins are already built into the left edge.
