No legal forms, on purpose

You will not find a will, a power of attorney, a living trust or an advance medical directive here. Rules for those documents differ by state. An attorney can prepare a will, power of attorney or trust. For a medical directive, ask your doctor, hospital or state health department which form is valid where you live. The pages here record which document you have, who prepared it, and where the original is.

Retention periods and other rules

Where a page gives a rule — how long to keep a tax record, when a document can be shredded — it is drawn from published agency guidance, and the page says which agency. Guidance changes, and your situation may have exceptions (a business, a property sale, an audit, an open claim). Check the current rule before you destroy anything you can't replace.
