The Home Binder Family Kit

Eighty-four printable pages that take a family's paperwork from a drawer full of envelopes to a binder somebody else could pick up and use. US Letter, print at home, one payment of $19.

The free starter is ten pages, and it is enough to begin. This is the whole binder: the medical section you hand a paramedic, the document inventory that survives a house fire, the money pages that let one person take over the bills, and a section for the part nobody wants to write down — where things are and who to call first.

Some of the pages

The kit cover page: the binder title with lines for the family name and the year.
The cover.
The Keep or Shred page: a table of document types with how long to keep each one.
Keep or shred, with the agency each rule comes from.
The medication list page: columns for the drug, the dose, who prescribed it and what it is for.
One page a paramedic can read.
The Where Things Are page: lines for where each important item is kept in the house.
Where things actually are.

Why the pages look plain

Dark ink, light shading, no solid color blocks. A home printer gets through eighty-four pages without emptying a cartridge, and a page filled in with a ballpoint pen stays readable when somebody photocopies it at a hospital desk. Three-hole margins are built into the left edge.

What it is not

There are no legal forms here — no will, no power of attorney, no medical directive. Those are written by an attorney, and the rules differ by state; for a medical directive, ask your doctor, hospital or state health department which form is valid where you live. This kit records where those signed documents are and what is in them, which is the part families actually cannot find.

It is also not filled in for you. Every page is blank and meant to be written on by hand.

Where the rules come from

When a page states a rule — how long to keep a tax record, what a bank needs to release a safe deposit box — the page names the agency the rule comes from, so you can check it yourself. IRS, FTC, SSA, Medicare and the CFPB do most of that work here.

How you get it

Pay, and the download link is emailed to you within a minute or two from Papers in Order, hello@papersinorder.com. The link keeps working for thirty days, so you can come back and print a page again. If the email has not arrived, check the Promotions and Spam folders first, then write to us — the file gets sent by hand.

If it is not what you expected

Ask for a refund within fourteen days and you get one, no questions and no form to fill in. Write to hello@papersinorder.com. The terms say the same thing in fewer words.
